Iceland: Tracks Across the Glacier

  • Expedition Type [ Arctic Expeditions ]
  • Difficulty [ Strenuous ]
  • Activities [ Camping, Hiking ]
  • Duration [ 7 Days ]

Expedition Timeline

Eleven percent of Iceland's surface is covered by an ever-shifting carapace of ice, a mass of glaciers and ice caps covering some 4,400 square miles. Head out on a Super Jeep adventure with your expert driver/guides to explore Iceland's glaciers as few ever experience them. The weather can be like a predator that becomes dangerous in an instant, with winds often topping 60 miles per hour and blowing snow that can flash-freeze exposed skin. Learn from your expert guide how to prepare for and cope with these conditions, allowing you the opportunity to appreciate the rugged terrain, glistening glaciers, interior highlands and comforting hot springs. At night, share stories with fellow intrepid travellers at your camp or glacial retreat.

DAYS 1-2

Arrive Reykjavik, Iceland/Glacier

Arrive in Reykjavik and meet with your fellow expedition members over dinner. The next morning, after your expedition briefing, start your off-road adventure toward the magnificent Gullfoss (“Golden Falls”) waterfall and the geyser geothermal area with its erupting hot spring. At the edge of the glacier, the guides deflate the Super Jeep’s tires so that it may float on the snow-covered plateaus that offer breathtaking views over peaks and mountains. Tonight, you camp on the glacier.

DAY 3

Glacier

Iceland’s temperamental weather changes quickly and can become dangerous in minutes. During today’s exploration, you learn life-saving tactics — including how to rappel into a crevasse and build an igloo. You traverse Langjokull Glacier, Iceland’s second biggest glacier and the second largest in Europe, heading toward Hveravellir Hot Springs.

DAY 4

Glacier

After breakfast, drive northeast to Setur en route to Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier. Experience Iceland’s extremes right away, with a jaunt to Iceland’s spectacular interior highlands.

Jokulheimar Hut [ B L D ]
DAY 5

Glacier

Spend the morning inner-tubing or skiing. This afternoon, witness the majesty of one of the earth’s hottest sites in the middle of the glacial ice of millennia: Grimsfjall, Iceland’s most active volcanic site. There have been more eruptions here than anywhere else in Iceland in the past 1,100 years. Then, take a naturally made steam bath on the glacier at the hottest point on earth, while the Northern Lights shine overhead.

DAYS 6-7

Glacier/Depart Reykjavik

Leave the glacier and visit Haifoss, Iceland’s second-highest waterfall, and the fascinating Thjodveldisbaer archaeological site. Then head back to Reykjavik. The next morning, transfer to the airport for your homebound flight.
